A disbud is what happens when a chrysanthemum is allowed to reach its full, uninhibited potential. By removing the lateral buds from each stem during cultivation, all of the plant’s energy is directed into a single, magnificent bloom – resulting in a flower of exceptional size, density and presence that the standard multi-headed chrysanthemum simply cannot achieve.
The result is one of the most structurally striking and long-lasting cut flowers available. On Arrival: Trim 2 to 3 centimetres from each stem at a diagonal angle and remove any foliage below the waterline before placing in a clean vase with fresh, cool water.
Water: Change the water every two days and re-trim the stems each time. Disbud chrysanthemums are robust drinkers - check the water level daily and top up as needed.
Position: A cool position with good indirect light will yield the best results. Disbuds are particularly sensitive to heat, so keep away from direct sunlight, heating vents and ripening fruit, all of which will shorten vase life considerably.
Handling: Take care when handling the blooms - the large, full heads of disbud chrysanthemums can bruise if pressed or squeezed. Handle by the stem wherever possible.
Longevity: Disbud chrysanthemums are exceptional in their lasting power. With consistent care, they should remain fresh and striking for fourteen days or more, making them one of the most enduring cut flower gifts available.
